Once again the benefits of a “Mediterranean” diet have made it into the news. Researchers have recently published results that support previous studies that such a diet reduces cardiovascular events. The diet traditionally favoured by our Mediterranean friends is rich in olive oil, fruit, nuts, vegetables, and cereals. Fish and white meat are eaten in moderation whilst dairy and processed carbs are limited. The research showed that it is non animal fat that appears to be a key to these findings. Those subjects who had consumed extra virgin-olive oil or nuts did better than those who simply followed a low fat diet. So combined with your exercise programme, treat yourself to some high quality olive oil and nuts…and cut down on those animal fats. Our Italian friends live longer than we Britts. Perhaps this is the answer!
